Basic Skills
Programme
The Basic Skills Programme
develops the key skills and aptitudes needed to excel in the
Basic Skills exam.
Our focus is not just to
prepare your child to be a one-exam-wonder, but to tower
upon those fundamental
academic skills that would be beneficial in your
child’s long-term learning career.
What are the Basic Skills?
The Basic Skills
examinations are government set tests undertaken by all Year
3 and Year 5 students, which measure a child’s abilities in
the general areas of Literacy and Numeracy.
The Literacy component
assesses a student’s capabilities in:
Writing
Reading
Comprehension
The numeracy component
evaluates a child’s skills in:
Numbers
Space
Measurement Study
Questions are made up of
a mixture of formats including multiple choice, short answer
and extended writing questions.
When do the exams take
place?
Exams are held every
year, usually at the end of July or at the start of August,
with students being automatically registered to sit the exam
by their school.
Why are Basic Skills
tests important?
The importance of Basic
Skills tests is evident from reasons that include:
Tests provide a gauge as
to the general understanding in the areas of literacy and
numeracy.
Tests identify student
areas of concern or weaknesses and allow parents and
teachers to support and reinforce students where necessary.
Reflect on the child’s
achievements and allow for the planning of future study
requirements (including the planning for selective or gifted
children schools).
