- Frequently Asked Questions
This page
features some of the most frequently asked questions that we
receive from parents interested in the education of their
child.
Why Tutoring? Isn’t School
enough?
Answer:
While Alpha Omega sees itself as providing services that
complement or supplement the work schools provide, the
reality is many schools are under-funded or unable to
provide the service that we can provide.
In a
tutoring class students are placed with other students who
want to learn or with students who have parents as equally
committed to the teaching of their child. Students
develop a competitive nature with other students of similar
levels of understanding (whereas with school classes, wider
inequalities can exist).
Tutoring
creates a more personal and approachable relationship
between teacher and students – allowing students to feel
more comfortable in asking for any help. This forms a more
ideal environment for students to get the extra attention
they need and deserve.
Is One-on-One tutoring
better than class based tutoring?
Answer:
No, not necessarily. Alpha Omega Education believes that
small classes are usually best because they support group
learning or team building theory and aid in a student’s
personal development, social and communicational skills
acquirement.
In a class
environment students are more likely to employ a competitive
nature of learning and students can also learn from the
mistakes and questions of others (as opposed to just their
own).
In addition
to this, students are more likely to learn in an environment
similar to the schools in which they are examined, with
research suggesting that this means they can achieve better
results.
How does Alpha Omega
Education compare with computer tutors or software
applications?
Answer:
There is no comparison.
While
computer tuition isn’t bad for practice, rote or repetitive
styles of learning, software applications can not offer what
we offer.
This is
because computer software usually offers tuition in
Mathematics only. Whereas, Alpha can offer a wider variety
of subjects, in a more interactive environment (with
teachers and other students) and promotes understanding (not
just memorisation).
With
Alpha’s people based learning, students are reminded and
motivated to do their coursework, learn how and why things
are done in particular ways and benefit from the interaction
with other people and the physical environment.
Are there subjects that all
students should get tutoring in?
Answer:
The
truth is, the answer to this question is – it depends,
according to the student grade, levels of understanding and
academic performance.
At Alpha Omega Education, we believe that tutoring is a
complementary service to every day schooling and that all
tutoring can have positive outcomes.
In agreement with this view, we especially recommend English
tutoring at primary levels of schooling. This is because
English in the early stages of development can help with the
comprehension of, and success achieved in, other subjects.
In addition to English, we may recommend Mathematics at
other times as the confidence from understanding Mathematics
principles, formulas and the problem solving abilities that
are acquired, can usually motivate students to apply
themselves more, learn in other subjects and aid in
understanding of the more complex sciences.
Do you prepare kids for
examinations?
Answer:
Yes, but we do not pretend we can produce miracles.
If a
student has done nothing for the whole school term or whole
school year then it is unlikely that they will be able to
learn everything they need to know for an exam overnight.
We run specially designed workshops and seminars which
help prepare students for government and private set examinations and
help develop learning skills, recommend examination
techniques, or promote self-motivation strategies.
We also run
consultation sessions, whereby parents can request special
classes, covering specified topics or areas of concern in
preparation for school assessments.
What are the rates like at
Alpha Omega Education?
Answer:
Our rates are very competitive and transparent. We believe we
provide the best value for money in the education industry.
We offer various options of payment including discounts for
early birds.
For obvious reasons, we have a policy of not
listing prices on our website, but to find out more contact
one of our representatives and ask about our induction
sessions which will tell you all you need to know about
Alpha Omega Education.
How much tutoring or study do you recommend your
students undertake?
Answer:
We usually suggest a minimum of between 1 to 2 hours per
individual subject, depending on the school grade and
individual student needs.
We allow students and their parents to decide the amount of
hours required and encourage additional hours (when needed)
by applying a discount as hours increase.
However, we remind parents that it is good practice to find
an equitable balance between study/learning and the
participation in other lifestyle events such as family
gatherings, sports and other leisure opportunities. An
over-emphasis on study can otherwise de-motivate or put
unnecessary pressure on children.
