What is ELLA?
The English Language and
Literacy Assessment (ELLA) is a curriculum based assessment
that aims at testing the
knowledge and skills of students in Literacy component of
the English language.
The ELLA test is
conducted by the NSW department of Education and tests a
students writing, reading and language capacities.
All students in Year 7
take this test as a measure of their level of literacy. This
in turn allows a reflection into how well they can expect to
perform in Years 7 & 8. In addition to this, the results are
used collectively by schools and the state government to
give an indication of literacy health levels in NSW schools.
This may subsequently mean that changes are made to school
and state literacy programs.
ELLA at
Alpha Omega Education:
We have developed a
Program targeted directly at developing your child and their
ability to cope with the expectations of the ELLA test.
With the prime goal of
improving overall literacy, our lessons are designed to
target all of the key areas of ELLA testing, including the
literacy elements of:
Comprehension
Grammar
Punctuation
Language and
Writing
Over a 7 week period the
students will be completing activities that will revolve
around the syllabus and the outcomes assessed in the ELLA.
They have the opportunity
to become familiar with the style of questions in the test
and to enhance their skills of interpretation, analysis and
the formulation of constructive response.
Homework will also be allocated to students each week in
order to ensure that all skills developed in the class can
be further enhanced by the students on an individual level
in the home environment.
The achievement and development of you child is our first
priority and all teachers are trained and willing to execute
all that is necessary to allow your child to perform at
their peak.

and overall expectations.
- The tests are another way of finding out
what students can and cannot do so that
future programs can help them (as opposed to
ranking them).
- All students do the
test at the same time
- There is no pass/fail
mark in the tests
- There
are no marks deducted for giving the wrong
answer
